Karl McLaurin served as the Director of Marketing at the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) in the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 2008-2015.

His role required him to manage internal and external messaging as well as establish best practices for departmental programs including newsletters and internal communications.

During this time, Karl organized and led various high profile events including the 2009 Smart Growth/Smart Energy Conference, Think Green, Educate and Engage, and an annual conference bringing together 5 State agencies at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

Not only was Karl responsible for maintaining the constant flow of communication between various state agencies and Office of the Undersecretary, he also managed cross agency-communication initiatives, created multi-media radio spots, and directed public relation initiatives for DHCD’s Employer Assisted Housing Program.

Next, Karl was selected to assist the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development in launching Communities Count: a comprehensive, multi-city program designed to assist diverse, disenfranchised neighborhoods that had been impacted by the foreclosure epidemic.

He was later appointed DHCD Liaison to the Governor’s Office of Community Affairs, and worked collaboratively with a variety of community-based organizations. In this role, he executed a series of Small Business Information Sessions designed to spur job creation and business development in municipalities of color, provided culturally appropriate media relations expertise and creative marketing concepts to the Mass Safe and Successful Youth Violence Initiative, and streamlined best practices between DHCD and key decision makers and legislators.
